Chateau Gaillard – Richard the Lionhearts Castle

Richard the Lionheart – King of England and Duke of Normandy  built Chateau Gaillard in two years!  From 1196 – 1198.  Two Years! It was built to protect both the Seine River and Rouen from the powerful King of France Philippe Auguste.  These two had set out on a crusade to the Holy Land earlier but had a falling out.

This fortress even though it’s in ruins is impressive.  It stands tall overlooking the river Seine and the town of Les Andelys. In 1862, Chateau Gaillard was declared a National Heritage Site.

Our first glimpse of the Chateau was from our ship that was docked at the village of Les Andelys.  Impressive from afar.

They have many events during the year at the Chateau.  If your interested in Medieval events then this is the place for it.  Medieval camps, weaponary, jousting!

The area is renowned not only for its architecture and history but also its  ecological aspect for its fauna and flora.

Some of our tour decided to walk down to the Chateau and then make their way into town.  Muriel and I decided not to.  August in France is hot!  This day was one of the hottest we had experienced.  A few pictures of the Chateau and the view then we hopped back onto our air-conditioned coach and back to the village of Les Andelys.  Mind you I could have looked at this view for hours.  Perhaps Richard the Lionheart also loved looking at the view!
