Our trip to Swan Hill via Lake Boga Victoria.

Middle of May, Greg had to take his new 4wd for its first service in Swan Hill. We didn’t take the caravan this time deciding to stay at Pet Friendly cabins in caravan Parks. Its about a 4 hour trip one way. The car was due for its service around 9am on the Friday so we started our trip on the Thursday. Our first night would be at Lake Boga in a pet friendly cabin.

Its only a 15 minute drive from Lake Boga to Swan Hill. We stopped at Deniliquin for lunch and to walk the girls. Purchased pies from the bakery and boy were they delicious. Betty and Sally thought so too.

This pie was delicious – Well worth the $$ from the Bakery

A life-size Holden ute made from metal objects found on farms in Deniliquin, the symbolic home of Australia’s iconic ute.

One town – Benjeroop we drove through still had the levy banks up. The roads had huge holes in them from the floods. If you were traveling behind us you might think we were drunk. You had to be all over the road to avoid these huge potholes!

We arrived in Lake Boga around 12.30 and thought we might see if we could check into our cabin. Luckily we could. What a nice cabin. Was right on the lake. Our girls were allowed in the cabin just not on the beds. It had a double bed, kitchen dinning room. Bunk beds in the second bedroom and a decent shower and toilet area.

We unpacked the car took the girls for a walk around the caravan park then we headed to the Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum.

Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum

Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum

If your in the area do visit the Flying Boat Museum, so worth it. Entry for us was $15 each for concession. Adults are $18 each, kids 3-16 $10 and a family pass 2 Adults 2 kids $40. The museum is open from 9-4. We had left our dogs in the car but we found out when we were leaving that dogs on leads are allowed inside the museum. Next time!

The museum tells the story of how Lake Boga became the depot of the flying boat repair from 1942 -1947. When Broome was attacked in 1942 by the Japanse resulting in the loss of 16 flying boats, there needed to be a safe haven for flying boats and amphibians. The pre-requests were south and inland. They the Defense force checked Kangaroo Lake and Lake Boga. Lake Boga being the preferred site as it was an ideal stretch of water for the flying boats and amphibious aircraft because it was almost circular (offering unlimited choice of landing/take off direction) and free of obstructions.

Uniforms to try on. While we were there Kids were making use of the uniforms

Gregs grandfather was stationed at Lake Boga working on the flying boats. This made this all the more interesting. You can use the computers to check up on family members who were stationed there during the war.

You could spend hours looking through the museum, so much to see.

Once we left the museum we took the girls for another walk around the lake.

Then we went back to the cabin to feed the girls their dinner and then went to the Lake Boga Hotel for a couple of drinks and dinner.

We sat out in the courtyard where we met some really interesting people. Everyone was very friendly and we chatted for ages till our meal was ready.

One lady had moved to Lake Boga from East Gipsland in Victoria. She purchased the church sight unseen to live in. She moved there in 2021 here and her 3 cars, hot rods I think.

We finished our delicious meal and drove back to the cabin for a good nights sleep. Up early next morning and caught some beautiful shots of the sunrise over the lake. Took girls for another early morning walk along the water. Then quickly packed up and headed for Swan Hill to get the car serviced.

Sunrise on Friday morning before we headed to Swan Hill Victoria. Isnt it just beautiful!

Will write more on this trip on another post.

    • Oh Linda I’m so sorry I just realised I never responded to you. The sunrise was really beautiful. We are heading to Lake Boga this time with our caravan. It’s going to be oh so hot! 40 degrees and up usually at the time we will be going. Hopefully a few more sunrises to capture. The museum we will go back as well.
