Sea Lake- Lake Tyrrell the pink lake

Sea Lake’s Silo Art

Wow what can I say. My last words on the previous post of Lake Boga was “i hope its not too long before I write the next blog.” Well its been a while. Its been a year. We lost our beloved Betty the 8 year old Kelpie. We now have a 4 month old Kelpie Rosie who just is a crazy lovable puppy. She is either stop or go. Mostly go.

We left Lake Boga and made our way to Sea Lake to stay for a few days.

Sea Lake is a vibrant town with a pub the Royal Hotel, hardware store, foodland grocery store, Top Cafe, Bottom Cafe, ( gotta laugh at those names) and the art gallery/cafe. Oh and the chemist – it had all its windows with pictures from 1918 – the Spanish Flu. My photos didnt really turn out well however will post on instagram later.

Sea Lake is about 50 minutes or 75 km’s from Lake Boga. Sea Lake to Melbourne is roughly just under 4 hours or 353 km’s.

We parked the car and van and looked around Sea Lake. Everyone is so friendly in the town. We stopped at a cafe/art gallery. They have an undercover area with water fountains lots of plants and its dog friendly. It was extremely hot – January in Australia is usually very hot. We ordered thickshakes – me spearmint and Greg caramel. Also some wedges with aoli. Oh my it was yummy and the girls were given a bowl of water and of course they had some of the wedges. Oh we also ordered coffee’s too.

Our Thick Shakes

Then went to the foodworks and got a few supplies – wine, beer nibbles and dog food.

Lunch

We had a choice of staying right in town at the Sea Lake Recreation Reserve or drive 10 kms south to Green Lake Regional Caravan Park. We decided to stay at the Green Lake Caravan Park. Great Choice, it was quiet – was extremely busy over the Christmas/New year . We arrived and spoke with the caretaker who lives on site. He said pick anywhere. $20 a night for water and power. Showers, Toilets a huge rain water tank which we were told we could help oursevles. Free BBq’s, boating, fishing and swimming. If you dont see the caretaker there is a red box at the entry. The money goes towards the amenties and keeping Green Lake beautiful.

At Green Lake Recreation Reserve

We were about to pick a spot and the caretaker came over and said he would show us a great spot. It was right near the showers and toilets and bbq and boat ramp. In 2 days time we will be thankfull he showed us this spot.

We quickly set up and then went for a drive to check out Lake Tyrell – the pink lake. Not sure how but we took the wrong road and drove for what seemed like ages, then we realised our mistake and turned around and finally found the right road to lead us to the Lake.

Lake Tyrrell – the pink lake

Lake Tyrrell

is a unique salt lake located seven kilometres north of Sea Lake. The Lake environment  is host to Mallee reptiles, kangaroos, emus, white-faced chats, and an inland gullery. Its dry for most of the year although sometimes it can have a thin layer of water which evaporation then leaves a salt crust. The day we were there it was very windy as you will see in some of the pics. Sometimes the lake appears pink and others it dosnt. The day we were there you could see it was pink. Its dog friendly just dont let your dogs drink the salty water. Such an amazing place. It was quite busy with people visiting the lake. Even though in my photos it looks at times as we are the only ones there. They have a platform you can walk out onto the lake

Myself and Sally – red dog and Betty Black dog. You can see how windy it was

Until recently the Sea Lake Mallee Rally was the oldest currently running off road event in Australia. The track, 7 km north of Sea Lake, runs around Lake Tyrrell (the second largest salt lake in Victoria) and is 85 km long.  The competitors endeavoured to complete four laps of this gruelling track (five for National status competitors). Unfortunatly this is no longer running – due to some aboriginal artefacts being found.

Its free and if your in the area do yourself a favour and go and visit this amazing place.

BBQ at the Green Lake Recreation Reserve

We then drove back to Green Lake Regional Park. The girls had a run and a bit of a swim. Dinner time so we decided to have a bbq. We chatted to a family who were staying at the lake also. She let us know that the pub in town has great meals and its a community pub. Have a read here of how the pub belongs to the communtity. https://www.royalhotelsealake.com.au/Services

Dinner with a vew – this was taken about 8pm that night

One of her older kids works at the pub and said Tuesdays is Parma day. The restaurant in the pub while we were there was run by a couple from Europe. You can park your van out the back as well. No power or water though. You would need to have your own shower and toilet and grey water

We had a lovely night chatting and sipping wine. Sunsett was beautiful over the lake. We headed back to the caravan and settled in for the night.

Sunsett over Green Lake – Time was about 9.15pm

Next day we will take a drive to a few of the towns around and near Sea Lake. Hopefully it wont take too long for me to write more about our travels.
